Make volunteering a resolution

News   2012-01-09

With popular New Year’s resolutions like weight loss and health flying around, consider volunteering in the community part of your list for 2012

Now that 2012 has been rung in, the ball has dropped and the holiday parties are over let us take a moment to reflect on our New Year’s resolutions. Attainable resolutions are the strongest and longest followed.
During this Year’s Governor General address, David Johnston has urged Canadians to continue being “generous with their time, talents and treasure,” but notes that a new year brings a new opportunity to enrich the country. Johnston goes on to say that “An everyday culture of giving is one of the defining features of successful societies everywhere. This has been the case throughout Canada’s past, but we cannot take it for granted." Keeping this in mind we would like for you to consider including some of the following as a New Year’s Resolutions for 2012. (Watch the Governor Generals 2012 New Year's Message here.)

Keep nonprofit organizations in mind year round

Volunteer your time and energy on a consistent basis not just during the holidays or special events. You could organize a monthly food drive in your class, office or even amongst a group of friends. Gather a group of friends, coworkers together and sign up at the Fort McMurray Food Bank for a weekly shift sorting food donations.

Sign up for a weekly shift.

Build a relationship with a nonprofit organization
For example you could get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wood Buffalo. Being a Big Brother or Big Sister can be as much fun as it sounds. You get to play sports, do crafts, play video games, shop, hike, and bake, watch movies, or just goof around. Whatever it is about sharing a little time together - a few hours a week or every couple of weeks will make a big difference.

Share a little Magic!

Be a Knowledge Philanthropist
Knowledge Philanthropy is defined as the donation of one’s knowledge, skill and experience to move an organization or individual closer to its mission.
Be a tutoring with WRITE BREAK Adult Literacy Program. Working with this program is about giving an adult learner the tools they need to build a successful day. What’s more important though, is about giving a learner the essential literacy skills for life.
Students at any level of education can help out to with various formal peer helper programs, or even offer to help a fellow classmate. Start a study group.
Think of what you excel in and offer a helping hand.

Volunteer for literacy - be part of the solution!
Phone: (780) 791-8943

A few more ideas for 2012 Resolutions:
• Keep a swear jar collecting money for offences and donating them to a charity
• Become a board member
• seek out at least 1 volunteer opportunity
• encourage at least 3 family members and/or friends to become involved
• volunteer as a family
• offer at least 25 volunteer hours in 2012
• Volunteer at an event through workplace
• talk to co-workers about volunteering as a team

We hope that these few suggestions keep you going all year long. Keep in touch with us Volunteer Wood Buffalo thru Twitter, and Facebook for upcoming volunteer event. We are here in the Wood Buffalo Region to promote, develop, and support volunteerism.
Happy New Year from Volunteer Wood Buffalo!
